Este libro relata el fracaso de la oposición catalana a Franco entre 1939 y 1950. A raíz de la Guerra Civil, muchos catalanes se trasladaron a Francia, Reino Unido, EE.UU. y América Latina ?México en particular? en búsqueda de refugio. En el exilio y en Cataluña, los catalanes trataron de superar las dificultades impuestas por su dispersión, entre otros problemas, con el fin de organizar una oposición efectiva al dictador. En 1950, la comunidad internacional dejó clara su aceptación del franquismo, frustrando las esperanzas de los catalanes, tanto en casa como en el extranjero. Además de las dificultades de comunicación y de economía, los catalanes sufrieron divisiones internas, continuos enfrentamientos de liderazgo y malas relaciones con otros grupos, y no establecieron un programa político unitario o de las instituciones gubernamentales, con un coste de legitimidad. Por lo tanto, el fracaso de los catalanes se debió en parte a su incapacidad para organizarse.
