Aquest volum és una anàlisi fonamental per a entendre el lligam de l'escriptor nord-americà amb l'Espanya republicana i la seua acollida, durant els anys de postguerra, per part del govern del general Franco. Els primers tres capítols examinen les al·lusions literàries i històriques d'algunes de les seues obres en referència a Espanya, la seua relació política i literària amb Rafael Alberti i la recepció de l'escriptor a la llum de la seua ideologia. Els últims cinc capítols ofereixen i expliquen els documents espanyols, dipositats a l'Archivo General de la Administración en Alcalá de Henares, en el quals es dona testimoni de com el govern franquista va sempre considerar Hemingway un escriptor comunista, i per tant, perillós i objecte de censura.
