El presente estudio investiga el papel de la marcación tipológica en los procesos de cambio lingüístico y la adquisición del lenguaje. En particular, se centra en los cambios dentro de las generaciones de hablantes en la comunidad puertorriqueña del Oeste de Massachusetts en relación con el modo subjuntivo, y la adquisición de esta característica en particular por los hablantes de español como segunda lengua.
