This is an innovative rereading of the Latin American narrative of social critique that recognises the figure of “the people” as the backbone of the various strategies of protest. The analysis relates literary discourse with different expressions of Latin American political culture, revealing how this narrative accompanied the arduous processes of nation building in the twentieth century and interacted critically with major Western political traditions.
