Fray Luis de León empezó a escribir en 1572 De los nombres de Cristo, y la terminó en 1585. Esta obra muestra su idea definitiva de los temas que esbozó en sus poemas en forma de diálogo ciceroniano donde se comentan las diversas interpretaciones de los nombres que se dan a Cristo en la Biblia. El texto es considerado un ejemplo máximo de la prosa castellana.
